I spent about 10 days in the hospital, and I wasn’t ready to return home. I live alone and wasn’t steady enough to care for myself. That’s when I chose the Rehabilitation Center of Lisbon for the next step in my recovery.

The physical therapy team at Lisbon was incredible. They designed exercises specifically to help me regain balance and confidence. I was even able to walk throughout the building independently, knowing staff were always nearby. That support helped me feel safe as I prepared to return home.

One of the most meaningful parts of my stay was when I told my therapist I wanted to be able to push my dad in his wheelchair again when I got back to everyday life. She didn’t just say “okay”, she created a therapy session just for that. My friend happened to visit that day and played the role of the “patient” in the chair. I got to practice maneuvering and pushing with real weight. It was such a thoughtful and empowering experience.

The entire staff—from the nurses to the cafeteria team was kind, attentive, and genuinely caring. The environment itself was warm and well-designed. I noticed how much attention was given to the long-term residents, with areas set up for puzzles, games, and socializing. It made the facility feel alive.It was a difficult time in my life, but the care and compassion I received at Lisbon made all the difference.

While attending a conference in Des Moines, I took a bad fall and broke my hip. I needed surgery and a full hip replacement. When it came time for rehab, I was very careful about where I wanted to go, and I knew about the Rehabilitation Center of Lisbon’s reputation, and since I live just a mile away in Mount Vernon, it felt like the right choice.

My goal was simple: become mobile as quickly and safely as possible. I didn’t know what kind of timeline to expect, but I can confidently say that the team at Lisbon helped me recover as quickly as possible. The therapy, especially the physical therapy, was exceptional. My therapist was fantastic. The staff weren’t just skilled, they cared. There’s a fundamental difference between “care” and “caring,” and at Lisbon, you feel seen, heard, and supported, and I looked forward to my sessions every day.Even the cleaning lady brought joy to my days; she’d chat about her pets and family, and it was such a friendly reminder of the outside world. Every single person who came into my room made me feel better, stronger, and more connected.

My journey to the Rehabilitation Center of Lisbon began after a life-changing accident. I was hit by a car and had to be airlifted to the University of Iowa Hospital. I spent two months there and underwent five surgeries. When it was finally time to focus on recovery, I was transferred to Lisbon to begin rehabilitation. That’s where my healing truly began.

My main goal was to walk again. My leg was in an external fixator, and I knew it would take time, effort, and the proper support. Thanks to the excellent physical and occupational therapy at Lisbon, I achieved that goal, and I walked out of there with a walker. That moment was powerful for me. I couldn’t have done it without the care and encouragement I received from the therapy teams.One of the most memorable moments during my stay was walking most of the way to the dining room with the aid of a music walker. That small act represented so much progress. Another highlight was the friendships I formed, especially with two of my tablemates, who became close friends. We still keep in touch.

If someone asked me whether they should come to the Rehabilitation Center of Lisbon, I’d say yes, especially for the therapy. They helped me reclaim my independence, and I’ll always be grateful for that.
